NOISEY PRESENTS TT THE ARTIST MADE IN AMERICA INTERVIEW

VICE Noisey music's Kim Taylor Bennet gets up close and personal with Tt The Artist

Upstairs in an innocuous looking two-story house south Baltimore, is a small room, painted teal green and plastered with flyers and press clippings featuring producer and DJ Mighty Mark and spitfire rapper Tt The Artist. There’s a couple of laptops, a bunch of synths, and a tiny closet padded out with foam, illuminated by a single bulb. Mighty Mark calls this the headquarters of Zoo on Mars Entertainment and it’s in these cramped environs where Tt—that’s Tedra Wilson—lay down vocals for Diplo and Swick’s “Dat a Freak.” It’s also where she busted out arguably the best ode to cunnilingus, “Pussy Ate” (above).

“Right here, this is where we get it on and poppin, you feel me,” says Tt. “We got this special light, you can’t get this anywhere. Boom!”

Mighty Mark adds with a wry smile: “Million dollar budget.”

It’s a bit grimy, it’s 100% DIY—the set up is authentically Baltimore. A city that’s passed over by many touring bands, a city forever tied to The Wire, and more recently the set of gritty political drama House of Cards. It’s a city director John Waters has been flying the (freak) flag for for years, but in the past decade the metropolis has seen an artistic resurgence thanks to musicians like Dan Deacon and the Wham City crew back in the mid-2000s, thanks DJ K-Swift (who sadly passed away in ’08). Thanks to artists like Abdu Ali and DDm, The Space Is the Place Records, and hubs like The Crown and arts/film/music space Metro Gallery.

Hailing from Ft. Lauderdale—where she segued from marching band to rap battles in high school—Tt first moved to Baltimore for art school in 2002. Straight after graduation she hot-footed it to New York, but juggling three jobs, seven days a week hustling to pay bills meant that there was no time (or brain space) left for artistic endeavors. Since moving back from NY to Bmore in ’08 she’s come into her own.

“When I came in as a spectator I felt like I had to build real relationships with the community,” explains Tt, who currently splits her time between making music, organizing live art shows, and teaching video at Baltimore City Design School.

“She's more Baltimore than me,” nods Mighty Mark.

Updated July 29, 2014

It’s 1 A.M. on Artscape Saturday, long after the arts festival has packed up and gone home, but the Windup Space keeps the party going. The bass coming from the venue’s speakers is too loud, as it should be for electro-clubber King Tutt. Behind him, a host of familiar dudes: Unruly Records co-founder Scottie B, Artscape curator and DJ Chris Brooks, savvy local remixer Steve Lemz, visiting producer C Double, and a grip of other promoters, DJs, and friends who wander up to chat with the DJs.

Tedra Wilson, better known as TT The Artist, is the only female on the stage. She obviously stands apart from the blurry huddle. Though she’s the smallest by a large margin, she presents herself on stage as much taller than her a-little-over-5-feet-tall frame would suggest.

Tonight’s show is TT’s fourth performance in two days. Her nails and lipstick are on point, but then so are her sport tee and fitted cap, and she’s fierce on the stage, channeling one of her idols, Missy Elliott, on the springy, stunting, Diplo-produced ‘Dat a Freak.’ Her plea of a chant, “Are you gonna love a freak like me,” rallies the weirdos and demands booty-bounce battles, which she is all too happy to referee.

TT THE ARTIST X ARTSCAPE 2014

TT THE ARTIST PING PONG X VICE THUMP PREMIERE

Screen Shot 2014-07-16 at 5.40.01 PM.png

B-more vibes, bright lights, and butts. It's an undeniable combination, and Mighty Mark feat. TT The Artist and Sushi Samson's video for "Ping Pong" combines all three in droves. Plus, there's pixelated ice cream and lollipops floating all around the glitchscape in which the video takes place – First we felt kinda randy, and then our head kinda hurt, and then we passed out. When we awoke, all we could do is repeat "big booty" ad nauseum.

The track is off of Mighty Mark's first EP under his current moniker, as prior to this he was known as 'Murder Mark.' We're down with murder, but we're more down with butts so this is a good look as far as we're concerned.

TT THE ARTIST X JAMES NASTY CALVERT ST EP ON FACT MAGAZINE

James Nasty carries the legacy of Baltimore club forward into a new generation with his Calvert St EP. Think raw breakbeats, nasty vocal chops, and big horns that eviscerate the club. Featuring Baltimore mic work from Pork Chop (he of “Bring In The Cats” fame) and TT the Artist, and sly samples of Elephant Man (Fan Dem Off) and Slick Rick (Don’t Stop), plus a heavy duty edit from T&A label owner Tittsworth. As Jersey club continues to push club music's global spread, the level of production mastery on the Calvert St EP takes it back to the immediacy of peak era Baltimore club, without missing a beat in the modern era.

TT THE ARTIST X LA CHAT SCHWARZ OPEN UP REMIX EP

Schwarz native of Baltimore, MD has been readying an amazing EP of remixes for his “Open Your Mind” single now with the legendary La Chat (yes, THAT La Chat) and TT The Artist rap flip. The crazy remix package is loaded with remixes from the aforementioned 333 Boyz, Mike G, DJ George Costanza and the rapidly rising Byrell The Great. The whole package is pretty much flames and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Right now I’m heavily rinsing the rap flip but everything on this great new release from Thunderzone is on point and more than worth the grab.
