TT THE ARTIST CALGARY SLED ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE IN REVIEW

The best rap show of Sled Island 2016 was TT The Artist at Commonwealth Bar & Stage -HipHopCanada.com

Calgary, AB – On Jun. 23, Baltimore rapper TT The Artist came through Commonwealth in Calgary to perform her first of two sets during the annual Sled Island music festival.

Going into this show, I honestly had no idea who TT was. But the girl’s show at Commonwealth ended up being my favourite rap performance of Sled Island 2016. That’s right: my favourite rap performance of the entire festival.

Just after 10:30 p.m., TT took the stage and cranked the venue’s energy from 0 to 100 real quick. She bounced around the stage like a little fireball, spitting through her discography of tracks like “Thug It Out,” “Queen,” and more. It was a surreal

In addition to being one of the sexiest, pro-pussy shows I’ve ever attended, TT’s performance was also one of the most turnt sets I’ve witnessed. She typically spits over fast BPMs, and adds both trap and dancehall influences into her music. Basically, TT The Artist is unfuckwitable. posted by @Iheartart

DAPPER Q X TT THE ARTIST INTERVIEW

Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 2.07.31 PM.png

Welcome back to Fashion Rocks, a series that celebrates dapper musicians across the globe. This week we’re featuring TT The Artist, who will be performing on Sunday, June 26th at DJ Whitney Day’s legendary “The Party,” an annual multi-sensory, music-focused Pride event held at NYC’s infamous Marquee nightclub.

From sketchbook to rhymes, performer, filmmaker, creative director, community artist and designer, TT The Artist creates a well-blended sound of Baltimore club, hip-hop and electronic dance music. Hailing from Fort Lauderdale, FL and residing in Baltimore TT’s influences of Miami bass, Baltimore club and dance music has djs across the globe tuning in and spinning her records.

In 2013, Grammy award winning dj and producer Diplo caught wave of TT’s sound and featured her on his single “Dat A Freak.” On the heels of this achievement, Red Bull Music Academy took notice of TT’s musical talents and selected her as one of 20 artists to be a part of the Bonnaroo Music Bass Camp 2015. With two tours and performances at SxSW music festival and Coachella under her belt, TT’s vibrant, party starting cross between melodies and provocative raps is sure to paint a new spectrum of colors to the music scene.

dapperQ: When did you start performing – and what or who were your early passions and influences?

TT: When I was younger, I was always inspired by art. I used to sketch and draw every day after school. I was always a performer. It was in high school when I really begin to develop my artistic abilities. I joined the marching band and would have to perform in front of thousands of people. I also begin to write rhymes during my freshman year of high school. I use to rap everyday during lunch period with a friend of mine who was also my musical mentor at the time. What inspired me most to do music was I was respected through my voice. I am inspired by art and everyday life. The most ordinary thing can bring inspiration.

dapperQ: How has your work evolved?

TT: Touring and traveling to different countries and cities has really allowed my sound to diversify and evolve. I used to focus on traditional hip-hop rhythms at the beginning of my career. Today, I like to incorporate multiple genres of music in my productions. I also collaborate a lot more with fine artists, animators and producers from around the world. When I experience different cultures, I evolve as a person and that influences my creativity.

dapperQ: How would you describe your current musical style?

TT: I am a dance music artist well known for my bold and provocative club anthems. In the past, I was searching for my lane and voice. Now, I own my sound. I also rap and sing a little too. I don’t think an artist should ever limit their sound if they feel that there is potential to experiment with other musical genres. You never know what you will discover about yourself. Who you thought you were may not be who you really are suppose to be.

dapperQ: Where are you based out of? Do you feel that your city/region influences your style? If so, how?

TT: am presently based in Baltimore , MD. Baltimore is a major influence in my music. I do a style of music called “Baltimore club,” which is a break beat genre of music derived from hip hop and house music. It’s also a big part of the city soundscape and community. It’s more than just music; it’s a subculture very alive in Baltimore and now around the world.

dapperQ: What other artists are inspiring you right now?

TT: I am most inspired by hybrid artists who are creating brands on multidisciplinary platforms. Hip-hop icons such as Kanye West and Pharrell are building creative brands. They get it. They are not boxing themselves into one lane. Fine artists such as Jeff Koons and the late Andy Warhol are two very influential artists who mastered the art of business though making art. I want that for myself. I do music, but I am also an artist who works with a variety of mediums. I want to create films. I want to host my own art exhibits. I am working on expanding my market and getting into lifestyle branding.

dapperQ: Music and fashion have always been intertwined. Some of the biggest style icons have come from the music industry, from Gaga, Bowie, Madonna and Beyonce to Andre 3000, Joan Jett, Pharrell, and the Beatles. On the runway, the perfect song has the power to convey the aesthetic of a designer’s work. Alternatively, the perfect outfit or personal style has the power to convey the aesthetic of a musician’s work. How would you describe your personal style when it comes to fashion? Would you say it is influenced by your music? If so, how?

TT: Most recently, I have been created my own designs and customizing my own clothing to wear during my performances. I think it’s very important to find yourself in what you choose to wear. Image is everything in the entertainment industry and it’s one of the only industries where there are no rules or dress codes. My custom designed pieces are very colorful and inspired by pop art, culture, politics, advertising and messaging. I love to play with typography and word art.

THUMP X AC SLATER X TT THE ARTIST

Bass-inclined Los Angeles producer, AC Slater, has linked up with TT The Artistto share "Squeak It Up," an sultry new track off his forthcoming Bass Inside EP onSkrillex's OWSLA imprint. Pairing the kind of hi-def, scintillating house chords that wouldn't sound out of place on a Butterz release with a fizzing bass backbone, Slater sets the stage for TT to jump in and purposefully yet playfully take control.

"TT's been working with a lot of different producers lately and just killing it," said Slater to THUMP via email. "I reached out because I thought she would fit perfectly on it. She sent back the vocals and they were fire! Chopped them up a little and finished the song. It was really that simple."

BLISSPOP X TT THE ARTIST

Written By CHRIS KENNEDY

I had the chance to interview TT the Artist, a legend in the making in the Baltimore Club scene. As her name might suggest, she is an artist in just about every sense of the word. She makes music, she paints, she produces most of her visuals, and she’s an aspiring filmmaker. Balancing all of these art forms seems just about impossible, but she’s pulling it off and pulling it off well. Read below as I chat with TT the Artist about the state of music in Baltimore, where she’s been, and where she’s going.

I know that you’re originally from Florida, and have also spent a little time in New York. What is it about Baltimore that caused you to stick around?
I actually moved to New York after I graduated college. I spent 2 years living in New York doing what most aspiring artists fresh out of art school do: I was hustling. Workin’ three 9 to 5s and working as a freelance artist on the side. My life had got to a point where I felt like I never had time to nurture my own creative ideas because I was too busy trying to pay my expensive rent in my Brooklyn apartment. So, I decided to go back to Baltimore and reconnect with a good friend of mine and start an art business. At that time in Baltimore there was no real art scene. I took the New York hustle and state of mind and applied that to everything I was doing in Baltimore. I started doing live painting in night clubs, art exhibits and high profile events. My return to Baltimore also enabled me to focus on building my music and sound as performer. Baltimore is a great city for artists to nurture their craft. The city is affordable to live and small enough to connect with a lot of people who can help you with your career.

What drew you into Baltimore club music?
It was a natural transition for me. When I started taking music seriously, my sound was more urban and straight hip hop. I was performing at the spots where you really had to earn your respect like 5 Seasons and Eden’s Lounge Organic Soul Tuesdays open mic…both of these spots no longer exist but they where both places where you could build a local following. It wasn’t until 2009, when I met B-more club producer Mighty Mark formerly known as Murder Mark through pioneer club producer Samir who at the time was working on a B-more club album with Aaron Lacrate. Mark was a part of a production team called the Yo Boys and they were making some fresh B-more club tracks. They needed a female vocal for a track called “Let Me Show ’em.” I did my verse in one take and the rest was history. I’m from Florida and I grew up on Miami Bass music so I could hear the similarities in B-more club music which made it easy to adapt to the sound.

So what’s in the pipeline for you in 2016?
2016, I will be bringing nothing but greatness. I kicked of the year with several collaborations and features on projects with SindenHerveDJ Shiftee,AC Slater, and Baauer. I recently had the opportunity to perform at SXSW and Coachella which was epic. I dropped a remix EP called “Art Royalty Abstract” through Space Is the Place records and I am preparing for the release of my debut album “Queen of the Beat.” I will be touring this spring and summer to promote the album. This year is all about making moves. I plan to be everywhere I can be and to meet and connect as many dots as possible. I would like to bring the club culture to the major stages and platforms. Baltimore has a lot of talent and I think it’s time for the world to put the spotlight on the city.

MIXMAG X TT THE ARTIST X DJ SHIFTEE X FLAVA D X DOPE GIRLS REMIX

Shiftee might be a two-time World DMC winner, but he's not just blessed on a pair of turntables. He's pretty decent in the studio too, as it goes.

Last year, the New Yorker treated us to a free download of his VIP mix of The Jazzman's 'Arkane Soul. Fidgety and frantic, the scratches and scribbles highlighted his career as a turntablist and, boy, does it bang.

Before that, he hooked up with Rx for the reckless 'Killa' and quaking 'Ice Is Back' on Hot Mom USA. Now he's delivering 'Dope Girls' with TT The Artist, featuring an all-female remix package, with UNiiQU3, FOXTROTT, Ducky, Kozee, Gun$ Garcia and London producer Flava D. The latter's no stranger to a banger herself, whether it be a grime, garage or bassline tune, either producing solo or as t q d (with Royal-T and DJ Q) on Butterz.

NEW MUSIC "QUEEN" FT LA MU DEY X HANDS UP! X GUESS WHO ON THE TRACK

Artist Note:

Queen," is a song paying homage to women of color who are breaking the mold in media. I can't help but feel that we should began to look at all women  as Queens who are taking ownership of their power in a male dominated industry. In my own journey I have been called a bitch due to my aggressive take charge attitude in the workplace while my male counterparts are labeled "bosses."This song barely scratches the surface of the evolution of the black women in media. I would need to dedicate an entire project to tell that story, but this is a small piece of a whole pie showing respect and love to all my women out there grinding. Yes, I can be a BITCH and I know a few bad "BITCHES," but #RESPEK me as a QUEEN when it comes to handling my business.

TT THE ARTIST X GIVING BACK X ASHLEY'S DPT SCHOOL DREAM

If anyone knows me, they know that I am big on supporting education and professional development. I would love for all my supporters to check out my little sis Ashley gofundme fundraiser as she pursues her lifelong dream of becoming a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy. Ashley says

"As many of you may know I have recently been accepted into Nova Southeastern University’s Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program for the upcoming 2016 summer semester. My current acceptance status places me in a unique situation. I am listed as a MODEL ALTERNATE STUDENT. This means that I will have to prove myself the first semester and earn my complete acceptance into the DPT program for the following semesters/years.

With that being said I was informed that based on my alternate student status I am not be eligible for financial aid and will be considered a “CASH” student. That is why I have created this GoFundMe page.

Becoming a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy has been a lifelong dream of mine. I am passionate about my profession but even more passionate about helping others heal on a daily basis. After years of preparation, studying, application processes and a great multitude of other requirements I am moments away from making this dream a reality. However, I CANNOT do this on my own. Your help is needed now more than ever!
